Der EVG ist ein Switch aus der “Cisco Catalyst 6500-E Serie”, d. h. ein Netzwerk-Device bestehend aus Hardware und Software, das als Infrastrukturkomponente dient, um IP-Netzwerke aufzubauen. Der EVG ermöglicht den Aufbau von großen IP-Netzen, indem mehrere kleine Netze oder Netzsegmente miteinander verknüpft werden. Als Layer2 Switch analysiert der EVG die an einem Port eingehenden Ethernet Frames und leitet sie basierend auf den in den Frames enthaltenen Informationen weiter zu einem Zielport. Als Layer3 Switch/Router unterstützt der EVG das Weiterleiten von IP-Paketen basierend auf internen Routing-Tabellen.
The TOE is the “Cisco Catalyst 6500-E Series” switching and routing platform, i.e. a network device composed of hardware and software that is connected to the network and has an infrastructure role in the overall enterprise. The TOE is used to construct IP networks by interconnecting multiple smaller networks or network segments. As a Layer2 switch, it performs analysis of incoming frames, makes for-warding decisions based on information contained in the frames, and forwards the frames toward the destination. As a Layer3 switch/router, it supports routing of traffic based on tables identifying available routes, conditions, distance, and costs to determine the best route for a given packet.
