For several years now, the BSI has been carrying out projects on various aspects of biometric procedures. These are mainly technical studies on predefined aspects of the biometric procedures involved, e.g. BioFinger and BioFace. In addition, field studies are being carried out on biometric procedures to determine their suitability for practical use in specific applications.

For example, the BioP project series focused on fingerprint, facial and iris recognition procedures in practice in relation to the operational scenario of ID documents. The recognition performance and security of the systems examined as well as a study of the usability and acceptance of the procedures involved were highly relevant.
