If you suspect that someone has logged into your account, the last thing you should do is bury your head in the sand about it. These are some initial steps that may help:

If you suspect that someone has logged into your account:

  • You should change the account password immediately, along with the password for the associated e-mail address.
  • If you can no longer log in,

    • use the "Forgotten password function". The operator of the social network will send you an e-mail that you can use to reset your password and therefore regain control of your account.
    • If this does not work, you should immediately contact the platform's customer support.

Report cyberstalkers

Bullying is defined as defamation, insulting behaviour and humiliation online. Cyber stalkers are defined as individuals that continuously contact you against your will via social networks or messengers. If this happens to you, you can normally contact the operator of the relevant social network directly. They can look into the situation and if necessary delete the dubious account. Beyond that, you should also contact the police to report a crime. Further information on cyber bullying & cyber stalking.

Protecting young people

Many operators have appointed representatives for young people and points of contact for infringements. You can find a form for reporting content that is dangerous to children at Jugendschutz.net (form available in English).
