Internet of Things

How to set up your smart home as securely as possible and what you must bear in mind in relation to smart toys.

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a connected world of smart devices. These IoT devices behave like computers and are connected to a local network or with other devices over the Internet. They are supposed to make our everyday lives easier, more comfortable and more efficient, for example, by measuring the temperature and brightness in a room and automating a whole host of processes based on this information. They may also enhance the collected data by adding other helpful information to it. The device will often send data to a cloud as part of this activity, where it will be processed, made available or serve as the basis for other services.

Where are IoT devices used?

Wearables, smart home, smart toys, digital assistants and smart TVs are some examples of IoT devices and where they are used; you can find comprehensive information and recommendations on the linked web pages. However, the terms Industry 4.0 and smart city are also closely related to the Internet of Things.

Industry 4.0

The phenomenon that is seeing digitally connected devices gain a foothold in industry is often called the Fourth Industrial Revolution – after steam-powered machines, assembly lines and microchips. The basic idea behind Industry 4.0 is for people, machines, products and logistics to share information amongst themselves directly and in real time, so as to improve productivity and efficiency. Digital connectivity can serve to better coordinate production steps and thus better plan how machines are utilised. There are benefits for logistics too, as algorithms can calculate ideal delivery routes or automatically order goods.

Smart city

Smart city is an umbrella term for concepts designed to make urban living more pleasant, safer and more energy efficient. Transport infrastructure, power and water supplies, lighting and municipal data management are fields where the Internet of Things often comes into play in cities and municipalities.

Can IoT devices only be used in a smart home when they are connected to the Internet?

The router: the cornerstone of IT security in the home

The router is the beating heart of digital connectivity at home. It is the hub via which all Internet-enabled devices communicate – be they computers, TVs or smart home technology for controlling blinds or heaters. You will find all the key information in this section: Routers, WLAN and LAN.
