Quantum Random Number Generators

An essential component of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols is the availability of high-quality random numbers. The use of quantum random number generators (QRNGs) is often suggested. The BSI, in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (Fraunhofer IOF), has organised two workshops to evaluate QRNGs. The BSI's position is that QRNGs are a special type of random number generator that is not necessarily superior to conventional physical generators. Statements like 'QRNGs provide random numbers based on natural laws and are therefore secure' are certainly untrue. In its methodology for evaluating random number generators (application notes and scheme interpretations for AIS 20/31), the BSI intends to categorise QRNGs according to the existing functionality classes.
