Strategy for Critical Infrastructure Protection

Critical infrastructures (KRITIS) are organisations and facilities of major importance for society whose failure or impairment would cause a sustained shortage of supplies, significant disruptions to public order, safety and security or other dramatic consequences.

Significance of critical infrastructures for our society

Today more than ever, our society is dependent on technical systems. Industrial processes are no longer conceivable without electricity, while information and communication technology is the prerequisite for banking transactions and much more. Almost every area of our daily lives is supported by modern technology. All these technical systems and facilities require certain basic services to function properly.

In terms of the critical infrastructures or KRITIS field, the BSI is particularly focused on IT threats, or in other words, the protection of critical information infrastructure. The BSI uses the term 'critical information infrastructure' to mean both the information technology and telecommunications sector and the ICT-based infrastructures of other sectors.
