To ensure that it can perform its role in the protection of critical infrastructure effectively, the BSI relies on knowledge of the functioning and interdependencies of critical infrastructure that is as accurate and up-to-date as possible. The economic, technological, political and regulatory framework conditions and special considerations for the relevant sectors must be taken into account and potential future developments must be assessed.

The studies provide the BSI with a basis for knowledge and working. They have been developed with the goal of providing an overview of the KRITIS sectors, the associated sectors and the critical supply services provided in the sectors, as well as the status of ICT security and reliability and the latest problems and trends in ICT security. In this way, the BSI aims to obtain findings and insights into how the critical supply services are dependent on IT systems.

Investigations will also be made into what impact any impairments to the IT systems used could have on the quality of critical supply services.
