What are Critical Infrastructures?

Critical infrastructures (KRITIS) are organisations and facilities of major importance for society whose failure or impairment would cause a sustained shortage of supplies, significant disruptions to public order, safety and security or other dramatic consequences.

Critical Infrastructure Sectors Regulated by the BSI-Act

Pursuant to Section 2 (10) BSI-Act, Critical Infrastructures within the meaning of this Act are facilities, installations or parts thereof belonging to the sectors of energy, information technology and telecommunications, transport and traffic, health, water, food, finance and insurance as well as municipal waste disposal and which are of high importance for the functioning of the community because their failure or impairment would cause a sustained shortage of supplies or threats to public safety.

Critical Infrastructures within the meaning of this Act are defined in more detail by the statutory order pursuant to section 10 (1) BSI-Act (BSI Kritis Regulation):

BSI Kritis Regulation defines critical services and thresholds

The BSI Kritis Regulation defines which facilities, installations or parts thereof are considered Critical Infrastructures within the meaning of the BSI-Act due to their importance for the supply of the population and thus for the functioning of the community. Whether a significant level of supply exists depends on reaching or exceeding threshold values listed in the BSI Criticality Ordinance. If these threshold values are reached or exceeded, the statutory reporting and verification obligations of the BSIG apply to KRITIS operators.

Even if your facilities fall below the threshold values of the BSI Kritis Regulation, we recommend that you participate in the UP KRITIS.
