BSI starts project work in San Francisco

city San Francisco
Date 08.09.2023

The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is strengthening its international cooperation with science and industry in the United States. During a ceremony at the residence of the German Consul General, the German Center for Research and Innovation Francisco (DWIH) and the BSI solemnly announced the start of BSI's new commitment in San Francisco.

As a pilot project, the BSI will work with the German Cyber Agency to conduct a study of the startup ecosystem in the San Francisco Bay Area to enable specific technology assessments in cybersecurity. The German Cyber Agency's innovation management team has already completed similar projects and developed various startup and enterprise datasets from different countries. The results of the project will serve the German government as a reliable basis for decision-making on future research fundings in Germany. The BSI, as the central coordinator for research projects in the field of cybersecurity, is actively supporting the German Government with its technology foresight to implement the cybersecurity agenda (link) and the targeted strengthening of cybersecurity research envisaged therein.

DWIH's tasks include promoting science and innovation. The German Cyber Agency focuses its application strategy-related and interdepartmental view on domestic and external security in the field of cyber security. The cooperation between BMI, BSI, DWIH and the German Cyber Agency increases the visibility of German innovators and effectively shares existing knowledge through networking and cooperation. The local Network of DWIH and its on-site infrastructure are optimal starting points for the BSI's project work, whose high level of cybersecurity expertise contributes directly to the on-site cooperation. In the process, new synergies will be created and already existing BSI collaborations are further strengthened.

BSI President Claudia Plattner: "Cooperation between research institutions, the industry and public sector actors enables the secure exploitation of opportunities arising from disruptive developments such as generative AI. Through this cooperation, research and innovation can be leveraged well-directed and tightly focused. Together, we enable the development and market access of cybersecurity-focused products and services - even across the Atlantic."
