A Trojan Horse is a program that contain undocumented, malicious functions in addition to seemingly useful functions. The program executes these malicious functions independently of the computer user and without the user's knowledge. By contrast to computer viruses, however, Trojan Horses do not have the ability to spread on their own.
For several years, 'virus notification' e-mails have been being sent that warn of a 'brand new and dangerous' virus that can be activated just by reading an e-mail and that immediately deletes your data or formats your hard drive. These notifications are not true. They aim to take advantage of the cooperative nature of computer users and cause them to take harmful actions. These notifications are referred to as hoaxes.
