The Directorate-General Z provides all of the centralised services that the departments require in order to carry out their work. As a central administrative unit, the Directorate adopts an agile, targeted and service-oriented approach to meeting the many demands placed on it by the wide range of specialist tasks handled by the BSI. Providing a modern working environment capable of meeting requirements is both the sections remit and a criterion for the continued success and growth of the BSI.

The Directorate-General Z currently supports nine teams and two project groups with the following task areas:

• Designing the BSI's organisational and operational structure, and the management of tasks, resources and ideas
• Employee support
• Budget appropriation, bookkeeping and financial management
• Facility management and the provisioning of all centralised services (internal services)
• BSI public tendering and procurement
• Protection of property and classified information
• Digitalisation of core tasks
• Recruitment and selection of management staff
• Developing potential of specialist and management staff
• Introduction of electronic file management
• Preparation, planning and implementation of construction of new office in Bonn
