What are our aims?

The BSI is the federal cyber security agency and the chief architect of secure digitalisation in Germany. Our objective is the secure use of information and communication technology in government, business and society. We provide support for information security, allowing it to be understood as a prerequisite for digitisation and implemented independently. We want to ensure that security aspects are considered right from the development of IT systems and applications: information security and digitisation are inseparable.

What do we do?

We assume responsibility for all issues related to information security. We protect the federal administration from cyber attacks and monitor the current cyber security situation nationally and internationally, investigate and assess existing security risks and anticipate the impact of new developments. Based on this knowledge, we support citizens, companies and authorities at federal, state and municipality level with services in the core areas of information, consulting, operational protection and development, including standardisation and certification. In addition, we are the regulatory authority for information technology security for critical infrastructures and digital services.

• Information: We provide information on all the important aspects of information security.
• Consulting: We advise on information security issues and support our target groups in implementing appropriate measures.
• Development: We design and develop standards, IT security applications and products.
• Operational protection: We protect the federal administration and the German government's networks from cyber attacks.
• Certification: We test, evaluate and certify IT systems, services and persons with regard to their characteristics or capabilities in the field of information security. The approval of IT systems for processing confidential information is also one of our functions.
• Oversight: We supervise operators of critical infrastructures and digital services with regard to their information security and are the central reporting point for IT security incidents and cyber attacks in Germany.
